Sciatica is pain that travels along the sciatic nerve from the low back or buttock down the leg. Conservative care helps many people recover without surgery. Flagler Chiropractic is at 1240 S. Oceanshore Blvd., Flagler Beach, FL — call (386) 439-9001.
What causes sciatica?
“Sciatica” describes symptoms, not a single diagnosis. Common causes include a bulging or herniated disc, narrowing around the nerve (stenosis), sacroiliac joint problems, and tight hip muscles such as the piriformis irritating the nerve.
Typical symptoms
- Sharp, burning or electric pain in the buttock or down one leg
- Numbness or tingling in the leg or foot
- Pain that worsens with sitting, coughing or bending
Our non-surgical approach
We start by finding where the irritation is coming from. Care may include flexion/distraction and mechanical traction to take pressure off discs, chiropractic adjustments to the lumbar spine and pelvis, K-Laser therapy to calm inflammation, and targeted stretching and neuromuscular re-education.
How long does it take?
Recovery time depends on the cause and how long symptoms have been present. Many patients notice meaningful change within the first few weeks. We track your progress and adjust the plan.
When sciatica is an emergency
Go to the ER for loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the groin or inner thighs, or rapidly worsening leg weakness.

Frequently asked questions
Can chiropractic help sciatica?
Many people with sciatica improve with conservative care, including spinal manipulation, traction and exercise. Your exam determines whether it is right for you.
Should I rest in bed with sciatica?
Prolonged bed rest usually is not recommended. Gentle movement within comfort tends to help recovery.
What is the difference between sciatica and piriformis syndrome?
Sciatica is a general term for sciatic nerve pain; piriformis syndrome is one possible cause, where a tight hip muscle irritates the nerve.
